The President of the Republic inaugurates a solar plant at Toujounine
The President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr., Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, has inaugurated, on Thursday at Toujounine, Nouakchott North, a solar plant of 50 MW in the framework of the festivities commemorating the 57th anniversary of national independence.
The President of the Republic has cut the ribbon symbolic announcing the start of the operation of this station before to inform on the illustrative data of this important strategic station.
He subsequently unveiled the commemorative plaque and listened to the explanations provided by the Director General of the Mauritanian society of electricity (SOMELEC), Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Ahmed and a number of his collaborators on the steps of the completion of this station, its production capacity and its role in the provision of clean electricity at affordable prices.
The total cost of this plant is 19 billion ouguiyas cofinanced by the Mauritanian State and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.
This station has been executed in a period not exceeding 13 months by a consortium of companies under the supervision of the SOMELEC.
The achievement of this plant is included in the framework of the objectives set by the Government in the field of energy aimed to generalize the access to the electrical energy of the population, to improve the quality of electrical services and to integrate renewable energies in order to diversify the energy mix.
Speaking on this occasion, the Minister of Oil, Energy and Mines, Mr. Mohamed Ould Abdel Fattah has stressed that the achievement of this plant will contribute to the supply of electricity to the city of Nouakchott in the short, medium and long terms.
He subsequently added that the project included the construction of a central photovoltaic solar energy of 50 MW with the civilian facilities required and the mounting of 156 540 electrical panels with a total capacity of 50 MW, electrical accessories necessary, of a system of control and a station of transformation of 33 kVA.
The minister has stated that the monitoring of developments in the field of energy in our country by the President of the Republic represents the best proof of the sincere desire and the conscience of the centrality of the economic factor in the national construction and the achievement of development to meet the aspirations of citizens.
He noted that during the period between 2009 and 2017, and on the instructions of His Excellency the President of the Republic, our country has managed to achieve major transformations by doubling the capacity of the Electricity seven times in less than seven years and strengthening the existing distribution networks to ensure a more complete coverage of the urban centers of 147%, which resulted in the doubling of the number of subscribers to 260 thousand subscribers after they were only around 107 000 in 2010. The number of cities with services of electricity has increased from 38 cities in 2010 to 157 cities in 2017, an increase of 400%.
The minister has explained that the electrical coverage in the urban environment, which did not exceed 55% in 2017, reached 73% in 2017, in addition to the efforts made by the State to exploit the renewable energies and clean.
The mayor of Brakna, Mr. Sidi Mohalmed Ould Khaidda has for its part indicated that the time chosen for the inauguration of this station coincides with the 57th anniversary of the national independence where the Mauritania is being reconciled with itself, stressing the importance of this infrastructure.
The inauguration ceremony was held e the presence of the Prime Minister, Mr. Yahya Ould Hademine, of the President of the National Assembly, Mr. Mohamed Ould Boilil, members of the government, of the high personalities of the State, the wali of Nouakchott North, of the diplomatic corps accredited in Mauritania and several officials of the SOMELEC.
